Dia de los Muertos

We look forward to this colorful, annual celebration every year, where we honor our loved ones who have passed with life-affirming joy.  With origins in pre-Hispanic Mexico, Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a celebration of life AND death, acknowledging death as a natural phase in life’s long continuum.  A centerpiece of the celebration is an altar, or ofrenda, and we will have one set up for you to bring your mementos and offerings for your loved ones (including pets).  We’ll delve a bit into the history of Dia de los Muertos and how we can incorporate its meaning into our lives today.

“To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.” ~ Thomas Campbell

“God pours life into death and death into life without a drop being spilled.” ~ Author unknown

“For death is no more than a turning of us over from time to eternity.” ~ William Penn

To complain or not to complain…?

Colleen was intrigued and inspired by one of Teresa Funke’s recent blog posts entitled, “Complaining is Getting Me Nowhere”,  because she (Colleen) has explored this topic several times over the years and it was interesting to hear yet another perspective. Teresa will join Mark and Colleen this Sunday to read that post and share her thoughts, along with the rest of us, on complaining.  Is it always a negative thing, or can it sometimes be positive?  We’d love to hear your perspective!  We’ll also have a full band on Sunday, with Myles and Emma Sloniker, and Cheri Nichols joining us!

~ William Arthur Ward

Community
It feels like our chosen communities are our saving grace these days ~ our “safe place” as we sang about last Sunday…a place of tolerance, acceptance, and love where we can be ourselves and feel supported.  What roles do your various ‘communities’ have in your lives?
And what better way to celebrate our Paths of Heart community than with a potluck, immediately following our gathering!  Details are below in the “Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest” section.  See you Sunday!

“The need for connection and community is primal, as fundamental as the need for air, water, and food.”~ Dean Ornish

“I know there is strength in the differences between us. I know there is comfort, where we overlap.”
~ Ani DiFranco

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

Sunday, October 14th – Our next community potluck (immediately following our gathering)! The weather forecast does not look great, so we’ll probably be inside (we’ll even crank up the wood stove for an extra cozy feel!).  Bring a yummy dish to share if possible, and also remember to bring your own washable plate and utensils, as we aim for zero waste (we do have extras if you forget!).  We’ll provide cups, cloth napkins, and a variety of beverages. Let’s ‘break bread’ together!

Tuesday, October 23rd – Our next Song Circle, 7 pm. Bring your voice and an instrument if you’d like.  We come together to sing songs of joy, love, peace, hope, kindness ~ whatever lifts us up!  We’ll have tea and a few snacks to share.  Love offerings to Paths of Heart are gratefully received.

Loving Kindness

It seems the world is a little less kind these days, and we’ve forgotten ‘who we are’ as humans.  The fallout from this divisiveness is rampant everywhere.  Let’s explore together how to fall back IN to loving kindness, and live up to the moniker of ‘Humankind’ once more.

“Souls love. That’s what souls do. Egos don’t, but souls do. Become a soul, look around, and you’ll be amazed – all the beings around you are souls. Be one, see one.” ~ Ram Dass

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

TONIGHT! Thursday, October 4th – “Paths of Heart Presents…” a house concert with “The Home Fires” ~ an Americana duo based in Minneapolis comprised of critically acclaimed singer/songwriters, Sarah Morris and Vicky Emerson. Sarah and Vicky are established touring artists and after developing a close friendship and playing live shows together, they unearthed a gorgeous new sound featuring Sarah’s clear, melodic voice and Vicky’s warm, weathered harmony. They are working towards releasing a debut effort for their duo in the spring of 2019.  We’ll start this evening at 6 pm with a potluck, followed by the concert at 7 pm.  Sarah and Vicky will do one long set, so we won’t keep you out too late on a “work/school” night!  Suggested donation is $20 at the door, though it is always your decision what to donate.  RSVPs are appreciated! 970-484-9600 or info@pathsofheart.org.
