September’s Swan Song

Sunday, September 29th

September’s Swan Song

September is nearly gone and there’s maybe a bit of melancholy in saying goodbye to summer, even as we anticipate the beautiful changes that autumn brings.  We’ll contemplate these transformations metaphorically and discuss how we can integrate change gracefully into our lives.

Quotes to ponder

“Fall has always been my favorite season. The time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale.”
~
Lauren DeStefano

“Another fall, another turned page: there was something of jubilee in that annual autumnal beginning, as if last year’s mistakes had been wiped clean by summer.”
~ Wallace Stegner

“Use what you have, use what the world gives you. Use the first day of fall: bright flame before winter’s deadness; harvest; orange, gold, amber; cool nights and the smell of fire. Our tree-lined streets are set ablaze, our kitchens filled with the smells of nostalgia: apples bubbling into sauce, roasting squash, cinnamon, nutmeg, cider, warmth itself. The leaves as they spark into wild color just before they die are the world’s oldest performance art, and everything we see is celebrating one last violently hued hurrah before the black and white silence of winter.”
~ Shauna Niequist

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

Saturday, September 28th, 11 am-3 pm ~ Fort Collins Peace Festival in Old Town Square. In light of our topic on ‘Creating Peace’ last Sunday, we thought we’d share this event with our community, in case you hadn’t heard! This is a family event featuring educational booths, music, dancing, puppets, crafts, speakers, open mic, and more to engage all ages in an afternoon of fun, inspiration and learning.

Thursday, October 3rd, 7-9 pm ~ Teresa Funke, a familiar face and frequent presenter at Paths of Heart, will launch her new book, Bursts of Brilliance for a Creative Life at Everyday Joe’s Coffeehouse.  This is a free event, and Teresa and Colleen will be performing an abbreviated version of their “house concert” where Teresa reads short entries from her inspirational book and Colleen pairs songs that dovetail with her theme. Desserts and light snacks provided!

Susan Skog, another Paths of Heart regular, has also just released her new book, Your Voice Matters: Stand Up, Speak Out.  Featuring some of the bravest, most inspiring young voices of our time, her book will help you use your own voice with more confidence, power, and impact.  You can get her book locally at Firehouse Books, through Amazon, or directly through Susan. Good stuff!

Saturday, October 5th, 7 pm ~ “Paths of Heart Presents…” House Concert with The Home Fires, an Americana duo based in Minneapolis comprised of critically acclaimed singer/songwriters, Sarah Morris and Vicky Emerson.

Sarah and Vicky are established touring artists and after developing a close friendship and playing live shows together, they unearthed a gorgeous new sound featuring Sarah’s clear, melodic voice and Vicky’s warm, weathered harmony. In 2018, they were nominated for Americana Artist of the Year by the Midwest Country Music Association and opened for Emmylou Harris. Sarah and Vicky continue to write songs in the car on their Midwest tours with the intention of recording a new album.

This is The Home Fire’s second appearance at our house concert series, and they’ll also be with us Sunday morning, October 6th, at our Paths of Heart Gathering!  Learn more about them and their music at https://thehomefires.bandzoogle.com We’ll have a potluck finger food and beverage intermission.  Suggested donation $20 at the door.  Hope you can join us.

We have just learned that due to a serious knee injury, our Saturday, Oct. 19th concert with Tracy Grammer has been cancelled so that she can focus on rehab and repair.  We sure hope we can reschedule it, as we were SO looking forward to having her here with us for the concert as well as a guest appearance at Paths of Heart the next morning!  We send her our best wishes for grace and ease in her recovery.  We’ll keep you posted!

Creating Peace

Sunday, September 22nd

Creating Peace

September 21st is The International Day of Peace, established in 1981 by a unanimous United Nations resolution.  Each year, this “Peace Day” provides a “globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace”.  We’ll celebrate this day and converse about what we can do as individuals and in community to nurture this vital mission on a daily basis!

Quotes to ponder

“Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.” ~ Martin Luther King Jr.

“Do not let the behavior of others destroy your inner peace.” ~ Dalai Lama

“Every breath we take, every step we make, can be filled with peace, joy and serenity.” ~Thich Nhat Hanh

“Peace is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process, gradually changing opinions, slowly eroding old barriers, quietly building new structures.” ~ John F. Kennedy

Saying Goodbye

Sunday, September 15th

Saying Goodbye

There will be many times throughout our lives when we’ll have to say goodbye ~ to loved ones that have passed from this earthly plane, to relationships that change, to friends and family who move away, to situations that no longer serve us….This Sunday we want to honor 2 very special people in our Paths of Heart Community ~ Sidney Waldrop, who passed away last Wednesday, and Judi Lucero, who will be moving from Fort Collins soon with her husband Rudy to be closer to family.  These two dear hearts have been a vital part of our community since its inception and will both be so dearly missed (Judi assures us she’ll be back to visit whenever she can!).  We’ll also explore the emotions that saying goodbye brings, however it manifests in our lives.

Quotes to ponder

“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” ~ Winnie the Pooh (A.A. Milne)

“So long as the memory of certain beloved friends lives in my heart, I shall say that life is good.” ~ Helen Keller

“I have learned along my journey that letting go doesn’t mean loving less.” ~ Alex Elle

“There are no goodbyes for us. Wherever you are, you will always be in my heart.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

For those who wish to attend Sidney Waldrop’s Memorial Service, it will be this Friday, September 13th, 9:30 am at The Masonic Lodge, 225 W. Oak St., Fort Collins.  Sidney’s obituary:  https://www.vesseyfuneralservice.com/obituary/sidney-waldrop

Thanks to all who’ve been attending our song circles over these many months.  What a joyous time we’ve had together!  Alas, we’ve decided to suspend them for awhile as we anticipate a very full schedule for the fall.  We are thinking our next one will be a holiday themed sing-a-long in early/mid December.  Thank you for your understanding!
