Keep On Keepin’ On!

Sunday, February 20th, 2022

“Keep calm and carry on.”
“Keep on truckin’ mama!”
“Keep Your Hand on the Plow.”
“Keep the Faith.”
There are so many ways to express this sentiment that even in the face of challenges, we humans have a way of persevering, of seeing the good in people and situations, of forging ahead no matter what and trusting that everything will be okay. We love that line in the movie, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, where the character Sonny Kapoor assures folks that, “Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.” (originally attributed to Fernando Sabino, a Portuguese author). It’s a light-hearted way of expressing our faith in the goodness of life, though appearances may sometimes suggest otherwise. Please join us Sunday as we ponder life’s mysteries!

Quotes to ponder

“If you were able to fall a hundred times as a child and rise, you are able to fall a thousand times as a grown up and soar.”
~ Matshona Dhliwayo

“The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keepin’ on
Like a bird that flew
Tangled up in blue”

~ Bob Dylan

“Don’t just create a change for yourself, be a centre of change to others.”
~ Richmond Akhigbe

“We will either find a way, or make one.”
~ Hannibal

“Many think that we have blown it
But they too will soon admit
That there’s still a lot of love among us
And there’s still a lot of faith, warmth, and trust
When we keep on keeping on.”

~ Curtis Mayfield

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

Paths of Heart Schedule
(Sundays, 11 a.m.)
As the county mask mandate is lifted, we will remain conscious of everyone’s comfort level at our gatherings and will make a group decision week by week.

February 20th – in person

February 27th – in person

March 6th – in person

March 13th – ZOOM Gathering

Request for guest presenters and musicians! ~ Thanks to those who have stepped up to present a topic on Sunday, or to share music! Please let us know if you’re interested or have ideas of other speakers/musicians you’d like to invite. A small honorarium is available.

Sending “Good Juju” and prayer ~ If anyone ever wants to receive our collective positive thoughts and prayers on a Sunday morning, please ask! We can be as specific or as anonymous as you’d like. Let us know if we can surround you and your loved ones in love and light!

“Paths of Heart” Labyrinth and Zen Meditation Garden – This was intentioned to be a community space, so know that you are always welcome to drop by and walk or sit – you do not need to let us know in advance. Do note that we have experienced the outer “halo” of glass blocks in the labyrinth to be slippery when wet, so it’s best to walk it on a dry day (not usually a problem in Colorado!). We also welcome volunteers to help keep our labyrinth looking beautiful and free of debris and weeds. Thank you in advance.

Giving Opportunities – Two ways you can support Paths of Heart without costing you an extra penny are detailed below:

King Soopers Community Rewards Program – if you shop at KS and have a rewards card, you can “link” it to Paths of Heart and King Soopers will donate a portion of your dollars spent (around 5%) to our non-profit. Go to https://www.kingsoopers.com/i/community/community-rewards to sign up and link your card. Our organization name is Paths of Heart and organization number is RG782. Let us know if you want help signing up!

Amazon Smile – We do love shopping locally and very often do, but Amazon sometimes fits the bill. If you are an Amazon shopper, you can make a difference by shopping at smile.amazon.com/ch/81-4175487 to generate donations for Paths of Heart!

During this past year when we weren’t meeting often, online donations became increasingly important to our organization, and are still always gratefully accepted on our website, https://www.pathsofheart.org/donate/. You can even sign up for monthly giving, which we deeply appreciate. Thanks so much for supporting the continuation of Paths of Heart!

Gratitudes

Though our kitchen is still “not quite finished”, we are grateful that it is now “fully functional”! We can’t wait for the return of our “Paths Potlucks” which we hope may resume on Easter Sunday in April!

What are you grateful for today?

“Thankfulness is the beginning of gratitude. Gratitude is the completion of thankfulness. Thankfulness may consist merely of words. Gratitude is shown in acts.”
~ Henri Frederic Amiel

“Gratitude is the fairest blossom which springs from the soul.”
~ Henry Ward Beecher

“Going to sleep with a grateful, open heart
is a powerful healing practice. Your dreams will become more inspiring and you will awaken in the morning
with a lighter state of mind.”

~ Dr. John Demartini

Love Is…

Sunday, February 13th, 2022

As the songwriter Darryl Purpose sings, “Love is everywhere at once…”
The choice is ours to tap into it. Love exists in so many forms, and is much more than just a feeling. Love is a verb, an act of supreme service. Ram Dass suggests that the most important aspect of love is not in giving or receiving love; it’s in BEing Love. Being in love means seeing the Beloved all around us, in everyone and everything. We’ll be spreading the love around this Sunday on ZOOM, and hope you can join us! Here’s the link:

Quotes to ponder

“Remember, we are all affecting the world every moment, whether we mean to or not. Our actions and states of mind matter, because we are so deeply interconnected with one another. Working on our own consciousness is the most important thing that we are doing at any moment, and being love is a supreme creative act.”
~ Ram Dass

“How did the rose ever open its heart
And give to this world all of its beauty?
It felt the encouragement of light against its being,
Otherwise we all remain too frightened.”

~ Hafiz

“We would have a healthier conception of love if we understood that love, like parenting or friendship, is a feeling that expresses itself in action. What we really feel is reflected in what we do.”
~ Rabbi David Wolpe

“Love is such a powerful force. It’s there for everyone to embrace-that kind of unconditional love for all of humankind. That is the kind of love that impels people to go into the community and try to change conditions for others, to take risks for what they believe in.”
~ Coretta Scott King

Your Place in the Puzzle of Life

Sunday, February 6th, 2022

When you are self employed, one does not necessarily get a longed-for “breather” to rest after the seasonal holiday bustle. There are tax deadlines that require a good deal of work to be met by January 31st! Well, they have been met and it’s now PUZZLE SEASON in this household, where Colleen, especially, unwinds from January’s task-filled days. We love the analogies that puzzles present for our many-faceted lives and our places in the community of humankind and the natural world. That’ll be our “theme” for this Sunday and we hope you can join us. There might even be a puzzle out for you to put in a piece or two! Masks are required for this in person gathering at 11 a.m.
Happy puzzling, Colleen and Mark

Quotes to ponder

“Like pieces of a puzzle, the many different aspects of your being come together to form the person that you are. You work and play, rest and expend energy, commune with your body and soul, exalt in joy, and feel sorrow. Balance is the state that you achieve when all of the aspects of your life and self are in harmony.”
~ Madisyn Taylor

“I believe that we are all puzzle pieces that fit together in a relational way.
We reconfigure ourselves to fit into new scenarios, but the shape of our intention for incarnating stays pretty much the same. Everything is possible when you find your gifts and bring them fully into the world. The puzzle is awaiting the piece that is uniquely YOU!”
~ Suzanne Rouge

“Life is holy puzzle.” ~ Lailah Gifty Akita

“Every chaos has an order hidden in it. What we see as a chaos, is actually driven by a very disciplined and dedicated order of things. What we need to do is focus on the stuff before us, make our way through this chaos, and that order will sort itself out for us.” ~ Sapan Saxena

Words to Live By

Sunday, January 30th, 2022

On this last Sunday of January we thought we’d delve more into the concept of choosing a “Word of the Year” – ONE word that can help guide us through the entire year, influencing our thought patterns and decisions, becoming a touchstone for how we approach life. It’s fun! And it just might take you places you’ve never dreamed of…Please join us in conversation and perhaps a little “exercise” to help you choose (if you choose!). Masks are required for this in person gathering at 11 a.m.
Love and Light, Colleen and Mark

Quotes to ponder

“The past two years have felt like survival mode to me — always reacting and not feeling a lot of agency or control. I want to focus on producing positive things through intentional effort, doing things that make a difference and that reflect who I am as a person.” ~ Kelly McGonigal

“Picking a word of the year helps you focus on the positive changes you’d like to make in your life, no matter what 2022 might have in store.” ~ Tara Parker-Pope

“A word…contains energy and images and meaning. These are things our hearts and souls can get excited about. And this is how transformation begins…” ~ Christine Kane

Living with Intention

Sunday, January 23rd, 2022

There are still 2 more Sundays in our “5 Sunday January” so we will continue with our cornucopia of January themes, this week focusing on Intention. Our choice was further reinforced by Colleen’s Note from the Universe this morning which read, “Intention, Colleen, is your gig. Miracles are mine. Symbiotically, The Universe.” 🙂 Intentions start us on a positive path toward manifesting our visions, dreams, and goals and have a nourishing, more gentle feel than typical New Year’s Resolutions that don’t seem to “stick” for very long! Please join us in the conversation (masks required for this in person gathering at 11 a.m.). Myles Sloniker is on tour in CO this week and will join us for some musical adventures on bass!
Love and Light, Colleen and Mark

Quotes to ponder

“Intention is one of the most powerful forces there is. What you mean when you do a thing will always determine the outcome. The law creates the world.” ~ Brenna Yovanoff

“Powerful words come with powerful intent. Where you have passion, strength, courage, and determination you can accomplish anything!” ~ K.L. Toth

New Beginnings

Sunday, January 16th, 2022

Greetings and thanks for your understanding for the late-notice cancelation last week. This Sunday we’ll be on ZOOM (link in the Notes of Interest section) and will talk about all the things we tend to talk about in January – beginning again, epiphanies, intention, hope, maybe picking a “Word of the Year”…actions that can help us “reset” and realign with our higher selves in this New Year. We’ll also honor and celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who continues to inspire us to live our lives choosing love, not hate, and to keep striving toward a better world for all. Join us if you’d like!

Love and Light, Colleen and Mark

Quotes to ponder

“The start of a new year is a time of hope, when collectively we all believe that we can put the past behind us, turn over a new leaf, start a new life, become a better person, make a difference.” ~ Kate Dardine

“Hope is a renewable option: If you run out of it at the end of the day, you get to start over in the morning.” ~ Barbara Kingsolver

“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” ~ Martin Luther King Jr.

“It’s never too late to become who you want to be. I hope you live a life that you’re proud of, and if you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start over.” ~ F. Scott Fitzgerald

The Unpredictable Life

The Unpredictable Life

Sunday, January 9th, 2022

There it is – My first time writing “2022” as we approach the start of a promising New Year! Hi Friends – Due to unforeseen circumstances (not Covid related) we will have to cancel this Sunday’s Paths of Heart Gathering. We hope you are easing into this New Year with intention, grace, and infinite possibility. We’ll be in touch next week. Thanks so much for your understanding.

Love and Light, Colleen and Mark

Quotes to ponder

“Knowledge is power, and it can help you overcome any fear of the unexpected. When you learn, you gain more awareness through the process, and you know what pitfalls to look for as you get ready to transition to the next level.” ~ Jay Shetty

“Resilience is all about being able to overcome the unexpected. Sustainability is about survival. The goal of resilience is to thrive.” ~ Jamais Cascio

“Sometimes we let life guide us, and other times we take life by the horns. But one thing is for sure: no matter how organized we are, or how well we plan, we can always expect the unexpected.” ~ Brandon Jenner

“True stability results when presumed order and presumed disorder are balanced. A truly stable system expects the unexpected, is prepared to be disrupted, waits to be transformed.” ~ Tom Robbins

January 9thCANCELED due to unforeseen circumstances

January 16th – ZOOM gathering

Gratitudes

Thanks to our guest musicians and all who attended our “Songs of the Season” concert last Sunday. What a sweet morning celebrating the holidays with you!

What are you grateful for today?

“Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.” ~ Eckhart Tolle

“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.” ~ Oprah Winfrey

“Appreciation is a wonderful thing. It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.” ~ Voltaire

Tabula Rasa

Tabula Rasa

Sunday, January 2nd, 2022

There it is – My first time writing “2022” as we approach the start of a promising New Year! Tabula rasa (Latin: “scraped tablet” – i.e., “clean slate”) refers to a smooth piece of slate covered with bees wax used for notes in ancient times, which was cleared by heating the wax and then smoothing it. We like using this analogy at the start of each year, as we “begin again” and perhaps take stock of what the past year held for us and what we might like to refine, change, or do differently. Sometimes it helps to go back to a “Beginner’s Mind” and be open to all possibilities. Let’s explore this concept together!

Quotes to ponder

“In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s there are few.” ~ Shunryu Suzuki

“You have so many opinions. And you suffer so much from them. Why not let them go?” ~ Ajahn Chah

“The more life moments you accumulate, the harder it is to “clear the slate,” the more mental baggage has to be melted and smoothed. There’s more unfinished life business to shove off the screen. In an interesting way, the more we can be everywhere, the less we can be right here, now. So, recognize that your mental equipment requires time to clear, to narrow the bandwidth, to focus…Give yourself the time “to scrape the slate clean,” to “melt the wax in the sunlight” and let it re-form a perfect blank slate.” ~ Jennifer St. John and the Fusion Group

Songs of the Season

Songs of the Season

Sunday, December 26th, 2021

On this Christmas Eve day, there is some sadness that we won’t have a beautiful and festive Christmas Eve gathering tonight, as has been our tradition for so many years. We do hope though that some of you can make it to our regular Sunday morning Paths gathering at 11 a.m. where we will celebrate in song and share many of your holiday favorites. Musical guests will include Kate Gregory on fiddle, Max Bezanson on bass, Oscar DeZoto on cajon drum, and Emma Sloniker on vocals. Merry Christmas everyone and Blessings of the Season to you!
Colleen and Mark

Quotes to ponder

“Christmas is not as much about opening our presents as opening our hearts.” ~ Janice Maeditere

“From home to home and heart to heart, from one place to another. The warmth and joy of Christmas brings us close to each other.” ~ Emily Matthews

“Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.” ~ Hamilton Wright Mabie.

“What is Christmas? It is tenderness for the past, courage for the present, hope for the future. It is a fervent wish that every cup may overflow with blessings rich and eternal, and that every path may lead to peace.” ~Agnes M. Pahro

Many of you have been asking about our (until recently!) “annual” Christmas Eve Concert. After heartful thought and consideration, we have decided to refrain once again this year. We feel we would have to curtail attendance to such a degree that so many would be left out, and it just doesn’t feel right to do so. Instead, we will celebrate in song the day after Christmas with several guest musicians and hope you can join us then.

We thank Jill Vesty for her beautiful river photo gracing last week’s newsletter and I apologize for forgetting to credit her! Must have been that booster fog! She also hosted a caroling party recently that boosted our spirits immensely as well! Thank you Jill for your jolly and music-steeped soul.

The Approach of the Winter Solstice (and it’s comin’ on Christmas, too!)

Sunday, December 19th, 2021

First off, I apologize for the lateness (again!) of the newsletter. Between the effects of my (Colleen’s) booster shot and intermittent internet problems, I am finally finding a window to send this out. As we continue to celebrate this Season of Light and Peace, we are excited for Winter Solstice and the gradual return of the Light, as well as Christmas and all the joy and magic this time of year brings. This Sunday is a Zoom gathering. Hope to see you on screen! Here is the link:

Quotes to ponder

“The winter solstice has always been special to me as a barren darkness that gives birth to a verdant future beyond imagination, a time of pain and withdrawal that produces something joyfully inconceivable, like a monarch butterfly masterfully extracting itself from the confines of its cocoon, bursting forth into unexpected glory.” ~ Gary Zukav

“While I relish our warm months, winter forms our character and brings out our best.” ~ Tom Allen

“Winter is not a season, it’s a celebration.” ~ Anamika Mishra

“After the longest night, tomorrow we sing up the dawn. There is a rejoicing that, even in the darkest time, the sun is not vanquished. As of tomorrow, the days begin to get longer as the light of day grows. While the gentle winter sun slowly opens its eyes, let us all bring more light and compassion into the world. ”
~ Dacha Avelin

May the light illuminate your hearts and shine in your life every day of the year. May everlasting peace be yours and upon our Earth.” ~ Eileen Anglin
