On the Path of Self Love

We thought we’d continue our conversation pertaining to self love ~ such an important precursor to all the other love relationships we’ll experience during our lives.  For many of us, it’s way easier to show love, kindness, and compassion to others than it is to be loving toward ourselves, both in thought and in deed.  Give yourself some Valentine’s Day love, and come Sunday we’ll converse about ways to nurture and love ourselves more.

Shadows, Love, and Celebration

Wow – what a powerful discussion we had last week on our “shadow selves”, and we only barely skimmed the surface, so we may delve in some more!  Mateo Sol says, “To completely experience self love, we must learn to honestly face our shadow selves…”, and with that day dedicated to love coming up next week, a LOVE theme will dovetail in nicely.  Then, there’s our celebration of Paths of Heart’s 6 year anniversary!  It’s hard to believe (and a wonderful thing!) that a decision to meet informally with a small group of kind-hearted souls 6 years ago serendipitously led to the creation of this human services non-profit which continues to touch lives near and far with its mission to create and nurture joy, compassion, gratitude, and love – in our own lives and throughout the world.  Please join us as we celebrate ALL of us, and stay afterwards for our community potluck!

Sunday, February 9th – Paths of Heart’s 6th Anniversary Celebration and Potluck!  Judi Lucero, “instrumental” in the creation of Paths of Heart, was so hoping to make it to our celebration.  Alas, the snow is preventing her from making the drive through the mountains.  We will miss her and her flute playing!  For those staying for the potluck, please remember to bring your own plates and utensils – this helps us tremendously with clean-up!  As always, Paths of Heart provides cloth napkins, cups, and a variety of beverages to compliment our meal.

Me and My Shadow

Gosh, there’s so much we could talk about today, it being Super Bowl Sunday, Groundhog Day, and a date that’s a rare, 8 digit palindrome!  But since Groundhog Day is Mark’s favorite religious holiday, we’re going to visit our shadow selves and discuss how we might embrace our inner darkness.  Don’t be afraid to face your shadow!  🙂

As often happens, a series of small encounters led to this week’s topic, one of which was coming across a book entitled, The Art of Mindful Birdwatching, Reflections on Freedom and Being by Claire Thompson.  In the Introduction she writes, “Who has never gazed enviously at a bird soaring in the sky?  Or delighted in the uplifting tunes of nature’s songsters?  Birds are an everyday source of beauty, wisdom, and wonder…”  She expounds on their inspiration for the practice of mindfulness and also as a “symbol of our freedom to soar…”  Sounded like a perfect Paths of Heart topic to us!  Bring your birding stories to share.

Celebrating the Life and Wisdom of Dr. King

Minister, activist, spokesman and leader in the civil rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will forever be an inspiration to those who believe in and commit to equality, social justice, peace, and freedom in our world.  His passion and dedication to life was undeniable, and we remain forever changed and moved by his words and actions.  It seems we still have a long way to go to fulfill Dr. King’s dream of equality for all, yet his courage and character remain an impetus to lead our lives steeped in love, peace, and kindness.  Our celebration will include special music with Marty Rein on bass, and Cheri Nichols and Emma Sloniker joining us on vocals.  We’ll have a “Peace Potluck” after our gathering and you are invited to share your favorite poems or readings about peace during our meal together (as well as during our gathering).  Please remember to bring your own plates and utensils (we’ll provide cloth napkins, cups, and a variety of beverages) so we can have near zero waste.  Thank you!

Karen Fritz is our featured speaker this Sunday.  Endlessly fascinated with what makes people tick, Karen has degrees in Neuropsychology and Computer Science from the University of Michigan and certifications in Integral Coaching, Divine Navigation, and Awakening Coaching. She thrives on anything that brings her deeper into the experience of aliveness at the creative edge.  A tidbit from Karen, leading up to her talk: “We think of mindfulness or meditation as all calm and stillness. But what does it mean to live as meditation in motion? To bring the fullness of Awareness into every Action we take? Can’t wait to hear how true Adventure shows up for YOU!”

Begin Again

Begin Again

At the start of every new year, there is talk and written word of “resolutions” everywhere.  Many of us have experienced the failings of these sometimes harsh and unrealistic expectations we put on ourselves to “do better” and “be better” at the start of each year.  And some of us have found kinder, gentler ways to create new habits and patterns we’d like to embrace: picking a single word to guide us through our year, or creating intentions and affirmations rather than rigid resolutions.  It is helpful to remind ourselves that we can “begin again” at any moment, and gently forgive ourselves for any behavior we may have beaten ourselves up for in the past.  Let’s begin again this Sunday and support one another’s journeys in these life-suits we inhabit here on Planet Earth.

You may park in the driveway, as well as diagonally along the north side of our property.  Should those areas become full, please park out on Hwy 1, which has plenty of space and a nice wide shoulder.  Do watch for passing cars as you are exiting and entering your vehicle, though! The carport area is reserved for folks with special parking needs. Out of respect for our neighbors, we ask that you kindly refrain from parking on Evans Drive beyond our property line. Car pooling is encouraged.  We also have a bike rack for cyclists!

The Return of the Light

Saturday marks the Winter Solstice, Sunday is the start of Hanukkah, Wednesday is Christmas Day, and Thursday Kwanzaa begins ~ what a week for celebrating the Light, both inside and outside ourselves! Even in the darkest of times, we can continue to carry the light within us. How do you let your light shine? How can we shine our light as a community?

Making Time for Silence

Amid all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it’s so important to set aside times for silence, meditation, and contemplative thought.  How ironic that this season of light, giving, and good cheer can often lead to stress and feelings of inadequacy; how easy it can be to get caught up in the commercialism and sense of urgency.  The busier we are, the more we need that quiet time!  Take some time with us this Sunday to sit in silence and breathe in the quiet joy of the season.
