A Million Dreams

This week’s topic came to Colleen in a dream!  Martin Luther King, Jr. had a dream.  We all have dreams for our future, but sometimes it’s hard to know how to implement them.  In Eric Butterworth’s book, ‘The Universe is Calling’ he speaks of the call to come up higher, to take charge of our lives, to release our imprisoned splendor.  Let’s explore together how to grow our dreams into reality.

“Dreams pass into the reality of action. From the actions stems the dream again; and this interdependence produces the highest form of living.” ~ Anais Nin, writer (1903-1977)

“If you show up fully for the journey, if you honor the process, you will melt right into the outcome.” ~ Jennifer Williamson

“People often say that this or that person has not yet found himself. But the self is not something one finds, it is something one creates.” ~ Thomas Szasz

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

This year we are planning on applying for several grants and are asking for help from anyone in our community who has grant writing skills and would have the time to lend a hand in the application process.  One of the components of many applications is showing the impact our non-profit has on the participants it serves, so we are also asking community members to write about their experiences here at Paths of Heart and how this community has impacted your life.  We really appreciate all feedback!

Our next Community Potluck – Sunday, February 17th, immediately following our gathering.

The Message of Dr. King

Last week we conversed about being our “highest and best”.  As we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. today, we are reminded of what an example he was for this intention.  He continues to be an inspiration for all who believe in the power of unconditional love and non-violence to change what is unjust in this world.  We’ll once again honor Dr. King in song with James Taylor’s epic “Shed a Little Light” with special guests Liz Barnez, Marty Rein, Cheri Nichols, Krisann Meyer-Corcoran, and Emma Sloniker!

We’ll also follow our gathering with a PEACE POTLUCK (details below).  We invite you to bring poems or quotes of peace to share with your table mates!

“I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

Did I offer peace today? Did I bring a smile to someone’s face? Did I say words of healing? Did I let go of my anger and resentment? Did I forgive? Did I love? These are the real questions. I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow now will bear many fruits, here in this world and the life to come. ~ Henri Nouwen

“I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.” ~ MLK, Jr.

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

Sunday, January 20th ~ Peace Potluck, immediately following our Paths of Heart gathering!  Bring a dish to share and a peace poem or quote if you wish, and remember to bring your own “table service” (plates and utensils).  We’ll provide cups, napkins and a variety of beverages.

‘Gratitudes’

We are sad to learn of the passing of Mary Oliver today, whose exquisite poems grace most every Paths of Heart gathering.  Still, as we grieve this great loss, we cannot help but be filled with gratitude for the life-changing poetry she left for us all to treasure.

“When it’s over, I want to say: all my life
I was a bride married to amazement.
I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms.” ~ Mary Oliver

You sure were…you certainly did…

Epiphany
This Sunday happens to be the 12th day after Christmas, and is celebrated by many Christian religions as The Feast of the Epiphany, marking the “manifestation” of Jesus to the world.   One doesn’t have to follow any particular religion, however, to contemplate an epiphany in the secular sense.
From Merriam Webster: epiphany
3a (1) : a usually sudden manifestation or perception of the essential nature or meaning of something
(2) : an intuitive grasp of reality through something (such as an event) usually simple and striking
(3) : an illuminating discovery, realization, or disclosure
b : a revealing scene or momentHave you ever experienced “an epiphany” that changed the course of your day, your mindset, or perhaps your life?

“Sometimes a revelation comes with a flash of heavenly light and a booming voice and sometimes it is jotted in a sun-bleached spiral notebook.” ~ Jeffrey A. Lockwood

“A great epiphany: I found out that I’m totally confused and I’m good with that. I’m consistently inconsistent. I’m all of the above. I’m OK. I’m a work in progress. That’s my next tattoo somewhere.” ~ Ronnie Dunn

“Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies, those transcendent moments of awe that change forever how we experience life and the world.”  ~ John Milton

Reflection
On this day before the last day of 2018, we’ll reflect on what’s transpired in this past year, how we’ve responded, how we’ve grown, the lessons we have gleaned…
Your comments, stories, reflections are most welcome!
“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”

– Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Reflection is a gift for your spirit: it allows deeper parts of who you are to come forth and be discovered, and it also enables you to create yourself anew. You begin the process seeking to find out who you are, and then you discover that you play a role in the creation of who you want to be.” ~ Jennifer Williamson

The Gift of Presence

A Blessed Solstice and Merry Christmas to you!  As we’re busily wrapping presents for friends and family, we’ve been thinking about the greatest gift of all ~ that of presence and being fully present in the moment.  It’s easy to get “wrapped up” in the busyness and stress of the holiday season, but let’s consider what’s truly important ~ just BEing with those we love.  The gift of one’s time is a treasure, and we are blessed to share it with you for an hour or so most every Sunday.  Let’s steep in this most precious gift together and count our blessings as we head into the New Year.

“Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store? What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?” ~ Dr. Suess

“Christmas is not as much about opening our presents as it is about opening our hearts.” ~ Janice Maeditere

“If you show up fully for the journey, if you honor the process, you will melt right into the outcome.” ~ Jennifer Williamson

“The right path is the one where you feel happy within yourself, at ease within yourself. When there is peace and harmony within, these questions lose their meaning.” ~ Shashi

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

The Gift of Self Care

It’s common to find ourselves overwhelmed at this time of year with so many obligations, events, “to do” lists and the like, pulling us in all directions.  How can we stay centered and balanced, so we can enjoy the sweetness of the holidays without the stress?  We’ll explore ideas for self care this Sunday!

The Light Inside

This Sunday evening is the start of Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights.  Many traditions from around the world also embody this central theme of light as we approach the Winter Solstice and the longest night of the year.  We’ll discuss how we can all be ‘bright lights’ for ourselves and others, and also share stories of our experiences with the YOU MATTER cards, as this year’s “Marathon” draws to a close.  We hope you can join us!

“Give light, and the darkness will disappear of itself.” ~ Desiderius Erasmus

“These are the darkest days of the year, and it’s no coincidence that the flickering flames of the menorah, the twinkling lights on the tree and the Kwanzaa candelabrum all harken to the human need for the comfort of light.” ~ Tracy Grant

“There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.”
~ Edith Wharton

Beauty All Around Us

We trust you all had a lovely Thanksgiving Day, however you chose to spend it!  We’ve noticed how people we’ve run into or seen on social media these last few days have been so kind, so appreciative, so willing to see the good and beauty that surrounds us.  Let’s keep it up!  As we enter the “holiday season” we can do so with love, generosity, and kindness, or give in to the pressures and stresses that can sometimes build during this busy time.  Choose Love.  Choose Kindness.  Choose Beauty.  And remember to breathe…

“Let the beauty of what you love be what you do.” ~ Rumi

“Love yourself. It is important to stay positive because beauty comes from the inside out.” ~ Jenn Proske

“Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing.” ~ Camille Pissarro

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

You Matter Marathon – Throughout the month of November, Paths of Heart will be participating in this global initiative that creates positive connections between individuals and within communities.  You are invited to take a handful of “You Matter” cards (we’ve got them here for you) and thoughtfully give them to others as you are moved to do so (or even leave them in public places for others to find!).  The possibilities are endless.  Here is a short video explaining the You Matter Marathon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=by97UBYpSpw
You are also invited to share your experiences with the cards on the You Matter Marathon Facebook Page!

Tuesday, November 27th – Monthly Song Circle, 7-8:30 pm. Bring your voice (and an instrument if you’d like).  We come together to sing songs of joy, love, peace, hope, kindness ~ whatever lifts us up!  We’ll have tea and a few snacks to share.  Love offerings to Paths of Heart are gratefully received.

#GivingTuesday and #ColoradoGivesDay are two wonderful opportunities to show your love for Paths of Heart!  Giving Tuesdayis this coming Tuesday, November 27th and is a movement to create an international day of charitable giving at the beginning of the Christmas and holiday season.
