Life According to Jazz

Having 4 visiting improvisational jazz players with us this week got us to thinking.  Life is like jazz – we constantly find ourselves improvising as the next unexpected twist and turn on life’s path leaps into view.  Myles Sloniker, Matt Chalk, and Marko Churnchetz will be our guest musicians this Sunday and will help lead us in a discussion of ‘An Improvised Life’.

Residing in Love

Last week we talked about being God’s Fool.  We can also be ‘fools for love’ ~ again, in a decidedly intentional and conscious way.  What would it take to stay firmly grounded in love ~ in our personal relationships, in our communities, amidst national and world events ~ when we might otherwise be tempted to experience frustration, anger, bitterness, or hate?  We don’t pretend to have all the answers, but together we can explore ways to keep us on the path of love.

“The greatest gift that you can give to others is the gift of unconditional love and acceptance.” ~ Brian Tracy

“Did I offer peace today? Did I bring a smile to someone’s face? Did I say words of healing? Did I let go of my anger and resentment? Did I forgive? Did I love? These are the real questions. I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow now will bear many fruits, here in this world and the life to come.” ~ Henri Nouwen

“Love is the power to see similarity in the dissimilar.” ~ Theodor Adorno

God’s Fool
With it being Easter AND April Fool’s Day, what better part for us all to play than God’s Fool!  We’ll look at this term in a decidedly different way than in the traditional, or religious sense, mind you, but we might learn a thing or two from St. Francis of Assisi…
We’ll also have our annual Easter Potluck this Sunday – we hope you can join us!

Witnessing Creation

Colleen and Mark’s recent trip to Hawai’i was a powerful and spiritual experience where the evidence of new creation was everywhere!  It inspired awe and reverence and wonder for our planet’s powerful forces constantly at work, seen and unseen.  What inspiration can we draw from earth’s creative flux?

“Between the conscious and the unconscious, the mind has put up a swing:
all earth creatures, even the supernovas, sway between these two trees,
and it never winds down.

Angels, animals, humans, insects by the million, also the wheeling sun and moon;
ages go by, and it goes on.

Everything is swinging: heaven, earth, water, fire,
and the secret one slowly growing a body.
Kabir saw that for fifteen seconds, and it made him a servant for life.” ~ Kabir (Robert Bly, translation)

Navigating Change
It is said that the only constant in life is change.  Sometimes our life changes are intentional and planned, and other times they arrive and catch us totally unprepared.  We may find ourselves afraid and resistant to inevitable changes in our lives.  How we can gracefully navigate these changes will be our topic this Sunday.

The Path of Playfulness
Have you lost your sense of wonder, joy, fascination, delight?  In this (at times) “world of woe”, it can be easy to lose our way, to get all too serious about things, have a doomsday outlook, and just want to crawl back under the covers and hide!  Remember when we were kids and we could be completely engaged in whatever we were doing without a care in the world? This Sunday, we’ll talk about ways to get our child-like mojo back!

“Play isn’t something separate from the daily grind of life. It is not something to finally get to when work ends. Rather, play, like music, is a force that we feel in our bones and that whispers in our heart. As kids demonstrate, play is not over there, but forever here and now.”
~ Vince Gowmon

“Adults are always asking little kids what they want to be when they grow up because they’re looking for ideas.”
~ Paula Poundstone

“We are never more fully alive, more completely ourselves or more deeply engrossed in anything, than when we are at play.” ~ Charles E. Schaefer

Honoring Our Grief
We have spoken with several folks recently in various stages of deep grief. The latest horrific school shooting has us all reeling with emotions of all kinds, and may be bringing up feelings of past and present personal loss and grief in our own lives as well.
We’ll gather in community to honor these feelings and see where it leads us.  Hearing others talk about their experience with grief can often help us with our own.

“The risk of love is loss, and the price of loss is grief – But the pain of grief is only a shadow when compared with the pain of never risking love.” ~ Hilary Stanton Zunin

“What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” ~ Helen Keller

“There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition, and of unspeakable love.” ~ Washington Irving

Celebrating Love

Today we’ll be celebrating 2 lovely birthdays.  “Paths of Heart” turned 4 years old on February 6th (woo-hoo!), and on Sunday someone (we don’t know how much he likes the publicity, so maybe you’ll just have to be here!) will be turning 93!!  What’s not to love about that??  With Valentine’s Day around the corner, LOVE seems to be a good theme, but then again, isn’t it always?  Just ask Hafiz, who tells us,
“The subject tonight is Love
And for tomorrow night as well,
As a matter of fact
I know of no better topic
For us to discuss
Until we all die!”

That’s what we do here at Paths of Heart.  Hope you can join us!

“Where there is love there is life.”
~ Mahatma Gandhi

“Let the beauty of what you love be what you do.” ~ Rumi

“Music is love, love is music, music is life, and I love my life. Thank you and good night. ~ A. J. McLean

“Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.” ~ Mother Teresa

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

A number of people have expressed an interest in singing together more!  We love this quote by Rumi (Ladinsky translation) that says, “Things are such, that someone lifting a cup, or watching the rain, petting a dog, or singing, just singing — could be doing as much for this universe as anyone.”  SO, we’re going to start a “Singing Circle” that will meet once a month or so on a Tuesday evening, starting on February 27th!  Everyone is invited to come with song suggestions of a positive, healing, loving, or peaceful nature and we’ll sing in community and radiate our energy out to the world!  Mark your calendar for the following dates:  2/27, 3/27, 5/1.
