Taking Action

Last week we celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Today, we ask ourselves how we can honor that legacy by taking action to improve the world we live in.

“Do you want to know who you are? Don’t ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.~ Thomas Jefferson

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”  ~ Anne Frank

A Celebration of Peace

Today we’ll be honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in song and celebration!  Local favorites Liz Barnez on vocals and cajon, Marty Rein on bass, and Emma Sloniker on vocals will join Mark and Colleen with uplifting songs of peace and freedom.  There will be plenty of sing alongs as well!  If you have a favorite quote of Dr. King’s, you are welcome to share it.

Dumping Ballast

Pat Kendall, Ph.D., a healing practitioner with LifePath Consulting, will be sharing her ideas on a process we might find useful as we “intention into” 2018.  In a recent blog post, Pat writes, “So often our intentions and promises to ourselves for the year ahead feel more like weights than wings….What if that weighed-down feeling comes from trying to rise up, to add new behaviors, new regimens, new changes, without dropping any of the old ballast that’s keeping us grounded? It’s hard to soar if outdated and limiting beliefs, decisions and reactions are anchoring us firmly to old ways, attitudes and energy levels.”  Pat will be sharing tools we can use to dump some of our old, limiting beliefs that may be weighing us down.  Let’s all soar in 2018!

“Argue for your limitations, and sure enough they’re yours.” ~ Richard Bach

“There is an eagle in me that wants to soar, and there is a hippopotamus in me that wants to wallow in the mud.” ~ Carl Sandburg

Christmas Eve Concert

We wanted to remind you that there will be no gathering on the morning ofDecember 24th.  Instead,  we will gather in the evening at 7:30 pm to celebrate the holiday season in a multicultural way with music, poetry, and readings from different traditions.  Myles and Emma Sloniker will be back in town to join us in the music, as will singer Eva Bacmeister, flutist Judi Lucero, and Rabbi Jack Gabriel.  Please join us for this holiday tradition and feel free to bring family and friends!  The concert will last approximately 75 minutes, for those planning other events that evening.  Love offerings/donations to Paths of Heart will be gratefully received.

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

The holiday season is here and we are so grateful to be sharing it with you and to be celebrating almost 4 years as a loving and kind-hearted community!!  Many of us plan holiday and end-of-year giving at this time and we hope if you find value in our Sunday Gatherings and all that Paths of Heart has to offer, that you’ll consider a year-end tax-deductible contribution.  We invite you to contribute through our website,www.pathsofheart.org for your convenience.  Just click on the “donate” tab.  We thank you for your consideration, as we plan next year’s budget and activities.  We hope to expand our invitations to guest musicians and speakers from across the country (and world?!) and to host other events of interest to our community.  A healthy donation record from individual contributors will also help us as we look at applying for public grants this coming year.  Thank you!
On our website you’ll also find past newsletters, a newsletter sign-up form, more about our organization, and a photo gallery.  Stop by for a visit and please share with friends!

“Good Reception”

We’re so happy to be back with you all, and have lots of stories to tell about our trip to Italy to visit our daughter, Emma!  There seems to have been an underlying theme to some of our experiences, and Mark will lead us on an entertaining journey describing these incidents with some subsequent insights.  See you Sunday with (jingle) bells on!

“I’ve got a radio that occasionally I listen to. It’s portable. It’s got an antenna. I’ve put a piece of aluminum foil on it that gives me a little bit better reception. And a refrigerator.” ~ Burt Shavitz

“Lux spent the ride dialing the radio for her favorite song. “It makes me crazy,” she said. “You know they’re playing it somewhere, but you have to find it.” ~ Jeffrey Eugenides

Indeed, our hearts are full to have Rabbi Jack Gabriel with us this Sunday to share his thoughts on gratitude!  Rabbi Jack is a spiritual songwriter and philosopher. He’s taught Kabbalah in many paradises, including Capetown, South Africa, Kailua-Kona, HI, and Sonoma, CA.  Mark and Colleen have known Jack since the 1990’s, and they’ve recorded two of his CD’s with him.  He’s a student and rabbi in the lineage of the great Mystic Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi.  Reb Jack is a Child of the Holocaust, born in a refugee camp in Italy.  His objective in life has always been to turn oy into Joy!  Please join us this Sunday for a very special gathering!

“You simply will not be the same person two months from now after consciously giving thanks each day for the abundance that exists in your life. And you will have set in motion an ancient spiritual law: the more you have and are grateful for, the more will be given you.”
~ Sarah Ban Breathnach

‘Gratitudes’

My goodness, what glorious weather we had for our potluck last week!  It was one of those lovely, everyday miracles, especially considering we had snow and freezing temps the very next day…. 🙂

We are grateful for your understanding as we take some time off this month from our Sunday gatherings.  We encourage you to still gather, in small groups perhaps and at your convenience, to continue spreading joy, love, kindness, and gratitude in your own lives and beyond!  We’ll see you again at ‘Paths of Heart’ on December 3rd!

Dia de los Muertos

As is our tradition each year around the beginning of November, we will celebrate Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.  Originating in Mexico and acknowledged internationally in many other cultures, Día de los Muertos is a lighthearted and joyful celebration in memory of family and friends who have died, traditionally celebrated onNovember 1st and 2nd. We will build an altar, or ofrenda, and invite you to bring photos, keepsakes, or other mementos to honor your loved ones, including beloved pets.  How serendipitous to have “The Frontera Project” as our music guests, featuring Abel Mireles, originally from Mexico, now living in NYC, and Myles Sloniker.  Our monthly potluck is this Sunday, too! See next section for details.

Seaworthy

Do you sometimes feel ‘lost at sea’, unable to ‘weather the storm’?  This Sunday, we’ll explore these metaphors (and more!) and examine our seaworthiness in this vast journey oflife!

“Your work is to discover your world and then with all your heart give yourself to it.” – Buddha

“Like when a boat weathers a storm, how might your relationships differ if conflict represented the test of a bond and an opportunity to strengthen the connection? How would the captain glean information about the boat’s seaworthiness if he left it docked in the harbor every time the ocean got a little rough?” ~ Bridgett Ross

B+

Colleen loves her blood type, as it reminds her to Be Positive! This Sunday we’ll discuss how we can remain upbeat in a world that sometimes wants to convince us otherwise!

“Our way of thinking creates good or bad outcomes.” ~ Stephen Richards

“There is a magnificent, beautiful, wonderful painting in front of you! It is intricate, detailed, a painstaking labor of devotion and love! The colors are like no other, they swim and leap, they trickle and embellish! And yet you choose to fixate your eyes on the small fly which has landed on it! Why do you do such a thing?” ~ C. Joybell C.

“When you are joyful, when you say yes to life and have fun and project positivity all around you, you become a sun in the center of every constellation, and people want to be near you.” ~ Shannon L. Alder
