Overcoming Our Obstacles

We’ll expand our discussion on ‘Taking Action’ by exploring the various – real or imagined – barriers (physical limitations, mental blocks, emotions, fears…) that might get in the way of fulfilling our visions and dreams, despite our best intentions.  How can we overcome these perceived  obstacles?

“If seeds saw dirt as their enemy, they would lose out on the opportunity to grow.” ~ Matshona Dhliwayo

“You must get out of fear and judgement to be able to act compassionately and purposefully.
~ Jim Welch

“If you find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere.”
~ Frank A. Clark

“Life keeps throwing me stones.
And I keep finding the diamonds…”
~ Ana Claudia Antunes

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

A number of people have expressed an interest in singing together more!  We love this quote by Rumi (Ladinsky translation) that says, “Things are such, that someone lifting a cup, or watching the rain, petting a dog, or singing, just singing — could be doing as much for this universe as anyone.”  SO, we’re going to start a “Singing Circle” that will meet once a month or so on a Tuesday evening.  Everyone is invited to come with song suggestions of a positive, healing, loving, or peaceful nature and we’ll sing in community and radiate our energy out to the world!  We’ll announce the starting date soon!

Friday, February 2, 4:00-5:00 p.m.there will be A CELEBRATION RALLY
United+Diverse=Fort Collins on the lawn between Plymouth UCC and the Islamic Center of Fort Collins (Lake and Shields).  From the organizers:
There are voices in our world (and in our own community) that would have us live in fear of one another. We believe it is only in community that our fears can be overcome. We believe love is more powerful than hate. On Friday afternoon at 4:00 PM you are invited to celebrate our unity in the midst of our diversity. Please join us on the lawn between Plymouth United Church of Christ and the Ft. Collins Islamic Center (Lake St. and Shields) for a celebration of peace and unity. We are Diverse. We are United. We are Ft. Collins.
Rabbi Hillel Katzir and Nina Rubin

Sunday, February 25th, 1-3:30 pm –Colleen will participate in the Peace Cafe’ with Combatants for Peace(http://cfpeace.org/).  It’ll take place at  First United Methodist Church, Elizabeth and Stover St., in Fort Collins.
There will be music, refreshments, and personal stories of a former Israeli soldier and a Palestinian freedom fighter, who share their transformation from a path of armed confrontation to a path of non-violent resistance.  An interactive discussion will follow. Sponsored by J-Street Fort Collins and supported by Veterans for Peace and the Jewish Action Network.  Tammy Breeding and Colleen will do a short set of “peace songs” from (approx.) 1:20-1:40 pm.

We invite you to visit our website,www.pathsofheart.org. There you’ll find past newsletters, a newsletter sign-up form, more about our organization, a photo gallery, and a ‘donate’ button, for those who prefer to donate to our non-profit with a credit card .  Stop by for a visit and please share with friends!

Taking Action (Take Two!)
With last Sunday’s snowstorm, it seems most folks decided to stay home snugly warm and safe.  That’s a good thing!  So we’re doing a do-over of last week’s topic, asking ourselves  how we can honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by taking action to improve our own lives and the world we live in.  We hope you’ll join us for this Sunday’s gathering and stay for our potluck afterwards (details below)!

Dumping Ballast

Pat Kendall, Ph.D., a healing practitioner with LifePath Consulting, will be sharing her ideas on a process we might find useful as we “intention into” 2018.  In a recent blog post, Pat writes, “So often our intentions and promises to ourselves for the year ahead feel more like weights than wings….What if that weighed-down feeling comes from trying to rise up, to add new behaviors, new regimens, new changes, without dropping any of the old ballast that’s keeping us grounded? It’s hard to soar if outdated and limiting beliefs, decisions and reactions are anchoring us firmly to old ways, attitudes and energy levels.”  Pat will be sharing tools we can use to dump some of our old, limiting beliefs that may be weighing us down.  Let’s all soar in 2018!

“Argue for your limitations, and sure enough they’re yours.” ~ Richard Bach

“There is an eagle in me that wants to soar, and there is a hippopotamus in me that wants to wallow in the mud.” ~ Carl Sandburg

Christmas Eve Concert

We wanted to remind you that there will be no gathering on the morning ofDecember 24th.  Instead,  we will gather in the evening at 7:30 pm to celebrate the holiday season in a multicultural way with music, poetry, and readings from different traditions.  Myles and Emma Sloniker will be back in town to join us in the music, as will singer Eva Bacmeister, flutist Judi Lucero, and Rabbi Jack Gabriel.  Please join us for this holiday tradition and feel free to bring family and friends!  The concert will last approximately 75 minutes, for those planning other events that evening.  Love offerings/donations to Paths of Heart will be gratefully received.

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

The holiday season is here and we are so grateful to be sharing it with you and to be celebrating almost 4 years as a loving and kind-hearted community!!  Many of us plan holiday and end-of-year giving at this time and we hope if you find value in our Sunday Gatherings and all that Paths of Heart has to offer, that you’ll consider a year-end tax-deductible contribution.  We invite you to contribute through our website,www.pathsofheart.org for your convenience.  Just click on the “donate” tab.  We thank you for your consideration, as we plan next year’s budget and activities.  We hope to expand our invitations to guest musicians and speakers from across the country (and world?!) and to host other events of interest to our community.  A healthy donation record from individual contributors will also help us as we look at applying for public grants this coming year.  Thank you!
On our website you’ll also find past newsletters, a newsletter sign-up form, more about our organization, and a photo gallery.  Stop by for a visit and please share with friends!

Paths of Heart participated in Colorado Gives Day by contributing to the following organizations:  Hearts and Horses, Lincoln Center Support League, 3Hopeful Hearts, and The Sustainable Living Association.  Other recent recipients of Path’s (your) generosity also include Children International and Trees, Water, and People.  We are doing our part to change lives locally and internationally!

Christmas Eve –
Sunday, December 24th, 7:30 pm (note time change since last newsletter!)

Instead of our morning “Paths of Heart” Gatheringwe will gather in the evening to celebrate the holiday season in a multicultural way with music, poetry, and readings from different traditions.  Myles and Emma Sloniker will be back in town to join us in the music, as will singer Eva Bacmeister, and other special guests.  Please join us for this holiday tradition and feel free to bring family and friends!

‘Gratitudes’

As this year draws to a close, we are grateful for safe travels, family, and friends, old and new.  We are grateful for the gentle wisdom, knowledge, and playful service we experience each week with you at Paths of Heart, which balances and guides us in love, kindness, and fortitude as we make our way through challenges.  And we again thank you for your love and understanding, which allowed us to so easily take some time apart from our community to tend to family, explore other lands, and recharge amidst our very full and yes, sometimes stressful lives.  Onward to new adventures in this sweet season of light and peace!

“Good Reception”

We’re so happy to be back with you all, and have lots of stories to tell about our trip to Italy to visit our daughter, Emma!  There seems to have been an underlying theme to some of our experiences, and Mark will lead us on an entertaining journey describing these incidents with some subsequent insights.  See you Sunday with (jingle) bells on!

“I’ve got a radio that occasionally I listen to. It’s portable. It’s got an antenna. I’ve put a piece of aluminum foil on it that gives me a little bit better reception. And a refrigerator.” ~ Burt Shavitz

“Lux spent the ride dialing the radio for her favorite song. “It makes me crazy,” she said. “You know they’re playing it somewhere, but you have to find it.” ~ Jeffrey Eugenides

The Grateful Heart

Indeed, our hearts are full to have Rabbi Jack Gabriel with us this Sunday to share his thoughts on gratitude!  Rabbi Jack is a spiritual songwriter and philosopher. He’s taught Kabbalah in many paradises, including Capetown, South Africa, Kailua-Kona, HI, and Sonoma, CA.  Mark and Colleen have known Jack since the 1990’s, and they’ve recorded two of his CD’s with him.  He’s a student and rabbi in the lineage of the great Mystic Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi.  Reb Jack is a Child of the Holocaust, born in a refugee camp in Italy.  His objective in life has always been to turn oy into Joy!  Please join us this Sunday for a very special gathering!

“You simply will not be the same person two months from now after consciously giving thanks each day for the abundance that exists in your life. And you will have set in motion an ancient spiritual law: the more you have and are grateful for, the more will be given you.”

My goodness, what glorious weather we had for our potluck last week!  It was one of those lovely, everyday miracles, especially considering we had snow and freezing temps the very next day…. 🙂

Dia de los Muertos

As is our tradition each year around the beginning of November, we will celebrate Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.  Originating in Mexico and acknowledged internationally in many other cultures, Día de los Muertos is a lighthearted and joyful celebration in memory of family and friends who have died, traditionally celebrated onNovember 1st and 2nd. We will build an altar, or ofrenda, and invite you to bring photos, keepsakes, or other mementos to honor your loved ones, including beloved pets.  How serendipitous to have “The Frontera Project” as our music guests, featuring Abel Mireles, originally from Mexico, now living in NYC, and Myles Sloniker.  Our monthly potluck is this Sunday, too! See next section for details.
