The Human Touch

As often happens, our Sunday conversations get so juicy that we don’t get to everything we intended to cover!  Such was the case last week, when we ran out of time for Mark to share an insightful NY Times article with us about friends with (health) benefits!  So that’s where we’ll start this week, talking about human connections.  We’ll also explore the human/animal bond in honor of St. Francis of Assisi.

“The need for connection and community is primal, as fundamental as the need for air, water, and food.” ~ Dean Ornish

“Some people talk to animals. Not many listen though. That’s the problem.”  🙂  ~ A.A. Milne

“Only through our connectedness to others can we really know and enhance the self.  And only through working on the self can we begin to embrace our connectedness to others.” ~ Harriet Goldhor Lerner

‘Gratitudes’

What a delight to have Judi Lucero playing flute with us last week!
We are also grateful for the window of wonderful weather that graced our potluck!  Rain in the morning and quite a storm in the later afternoon, but right as we were breaking bread together, we were dry and comfortable in the backyard, watching painted ladies dance around the mums!

Sunday,
October 1st

There are so many things we’ve been thinking about this week (!), but 2 of them are this concept of “At-one-ment” and the other is our sense of “Belonging”.  We hope you’ll add to the conversation as we discuss….and we hope you’ll stay afterwards for our potluck, which was postponed from last week!  The weather forecast looks pretty good so far…

“At-onement achieves atonement. Because, in order to achieve atonement we must first arrive at onement….On Yom Kippur we embrace our essence with that Essence Within and Beyond. And we say to one another, ‘The dance may be faulty, but the hearts are one.’ There is no longer “should”. There is “is”. All is forgiven. At onement. ~  Tzvi Freeman

“True belonging is the spiritual practice of believing in and belonging to yourself so deeply that you can share your most authentic self with the world and find sacredness in both being a part of something and standing alone in the wilderness. True belonging does not require you to change who you are; it requires you to be who you are.”
~ Brené Brown

While glancing at the calendar on Thursday we couldn’t help noticing the cluster of awesomeness occurring Wednesday through Friday: Rosh Hashana,  Muharram, The International Day of Peace, and the Autumnal Equinox!!  Let’s celebrate and breathe in wisdom from all these peaceful, diverse, and colorful new beginnings together this Sunday – Fall’s Superfecta! Singer/songwriter Megan Bee from Athens, OH will be our featured music guest.

**Important Note**: with the weather forecast calling for a plunge in temperatures and steady rain, we’ve decided to postpone our scheduled potluck till next week. Surely there will be some more warm days ahead, right?

This Sunday we’re embracing change as we embrace our dear friend Michelle who is embarking on a new path in Hawaii!  We sure will miss her!  We’ve also just said ‘Arrivederci’ to Emma Sloniker who will be in Italy for several months.  Change can bring a myriad of feelings from joy, to trepidation, to excitement, to sorrow.  The key is to embrace change and go with the flow – sometimes easier said than done!  Let’s share our experiences as we give Michelle a loving send-off!

“The only way that we can live, is if we grow. The only way that we can grow is if we change. The only way that we can change is if we learn. The only way we can learn is if we are exposed. And the only way that we can become exposed is if we throw ourselves out into the open. Do it. Throw yourself.” ~ C. Joy Bell

Resilience is this week’s topic.  We see it all around us, perhaps the latest example being the many brave souls affected by Hurricane Harvey.  How is it that we can sometimes more easily recover from adversity, while other times we struggle?  What are your “coping mechanisms” when you’re in the thick of it?  How do you “bounce back”?

Pat Kendall will lead a discussion on “Aging Gracefully”.  She notes that it isn’t just the “seniors” who might consider this: we are all aging.
“Every one of us woke up this morning a day older.  In our youth-worshiping culture, the question seldom seems to get asked:  Did we also wake up a day wiser?  A day more flexible, more compassionate, more conscious, more patient, more joyfully human and divine — just from having lived another day?  And if not, would we like to do that tomorrow?  What would it take to age gracefully all the days of our life?”  Join us for what promises to be a lively (and ageless!) conversation!

“You don’t stop laughing when you grow old, you grow old when you stop laughing.” ~ George Bernard Shaw

“Youth.  I don’t seek it through another because I have it within; it’s a state of mind, a spirit that is free, and a mind that is playful. The shell of my being is altered by the effects of time, but nothing will tarnish a soul that will never forget what its like to experience creation with endless wonder and appreciation. Each time I see the first snowfall of the season I feel it’s the first time I’ve seen it at all.”
~ Donna Lynn Hope

“The older I get, the less I know. It’s wonderful–it makes the world so spacious.” ~ Swami Chetanananda

Sunday,
August 20th

We’ve had numerous conversations this week about the different ways people handle challenging situations and emotions in their lives. There is certainly lots of anger and frustration milling about in response to national and world events; the unease is palpable.  How do we respond to violence and hate?  Colleen has had several lively discussions of late about being “for” something as opposed to “against” its opposite.  Is it merely semantics?  Or is there something to the “law of attraction”?  We know you have ideas!  Let’s help one another navigate the darkness…

“I was once asked why I don’t participate in anti-war demonstrations. I said that I will never do that, but as soon as you have a pro-peace rally, I’ll be there.” ~ Mother Teresa

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Loving people live in a loving world.  Hostile people live in a hostile world.  But it’s the same world.” ~ Wayne Dyer

“If you intend to be of assistance, your eye is not upon the trouble but upon the assistance, and that is quite different. When you are looking for a solution, you are feeling positive emotion, but when you are looking at a problem, you are feeling negative emotion.” ~ Abraham-Hicks

Sunday,
August 13th

Mark shared a book with us last week that he’s been reading lately, called “The Places That Scare You” by Pema Chödrön.  In it, she shares a concept called Bodhichitta, which she admits is not so easy to translate, but can be understood and observed in various ways and felt through actions and emotions such as compassion, open-heartedness, tenderness, sadness, empathy, and love.  It is our “soft spot, a place as vulnerable and tender as an open wound.”This Sunday we’ll explore how we can awaken our own bodhichitta, to “inspire and support us in good times and bad.”

“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” ~ Antoine de Saint Exupéry

“Hatred never ceases by hatred, but by love alone is healed.  This is ancient and eternal law.” ~ The Buddha

Sunday,
August 6th

This Sunday, we consider the tapestry of our lives – how we are woven together in a seemingly random (but is it, really?), yet beautifully (sometimes agonizingly) diverse and colorful array of circumstances, events, people, choices, consequences….
We welcome your stories and insights!

“As I look back at the entire tapestry of my life, I can see from the perspective of the present moment that every aspect of my life was necessary and perfect.  Each step eventually led to a higher place, even though these steps often felt like obstacles or painful experiences.” ~ Wayne Dyer

“Destiny itself is like a wonderful wide tapestry in which every thread
is guided by an unspeakably tender hand, placed beside another
thread and held and carried by a hundred others.” ~ Rainer Maria Rilke

“Each of us has a purpose for living beyond our own survival and
pleasure.  Every individual is like a thread in a beautiful tapestry
with a vital contribution to make, not only to the sustenance of
life as we know it, but in the creation and development of more
beneficial expressions of life.” ~ John Marks Templeton
