Sunday,
August 13th

Mark shared a book with us last week that he’s been reading lately, called “The Places That Scare You” by Pema Chödrön.  In it, she shares a concept called Bodhichitta, which she admits is not so easy to translate, but can be understood and observed in various ways and felt through actions and emotions such as compassion, open-heartedness, tenderness, sadness, empathy, and love.  It is our “soft spot, a place as vulnerable and tender as an open wound.”This Sunday we’ll explore how we can awaken our own bodhichitta, to “inspire and support us in good times and bad.”

“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” ~ Antoine de Saint Exupéry

“Hatred never ceases by hatred, but by love alone is healed.  This is ancient and eternal law.” ~ The Buddha

“In other traditions, demons are expelled externally.  But in my tradition demons are accepted with compassion.” ~ Machik Labdrön

Looking Ahead/Notes of Interest

Sunday, August 20th –Our next monthly potluck!

Sunday, August 27th – Pat Kendall will lead a discussion on “Aging Gracefully”. She notes that it isn’t just the “seniors” who might consider this: we are all ageing!
“Every one of us woke up this morning a day older.  In our youth-worshiping culture, the question seldom seems to get asked:  Did we also wake up a day wiser?  A day more flexible, more compassionate, more conscious, more patient, more joyfully human and divine — just from having lived another day?  And if not, would we like to do thattomorrow?  What would it take to age gracefully all the days of our life?”  Join us for what promises to be a lively (and ageless!) conversation!

Monday, August 28th – Our “movie night” will feature a “Tour of Italy” photo show presentation by Terry Bieritz, highlighting the Italy trip that he and Serena recently enjoyed.  Details on time and place are available at ourSunday gathering.  We’ll also send out a separate invite to all newsletter subscribers.

Sunday, September 17th – Myles Sloniker and Eva Bacmeister will be our featured music guests, in from NYC!

Saturday, September 23rd – “Paths of Heart Presents”Megan Bee as part of our ongoing house concert series.  http://www.meganbeemusic.com/

Sunday, September 24th – Megan Bee will be our featured music guest at Paths of Heart.

Sunday,
August 6th

This Sunday, we consider the tapestry of our lives – how we are woven together in a seemingly random (but is it, really?), yet beautifully (sometimes agonizingly) diverse and colorful array of circumstances, events, people, choices, consequences….
We welcome your stories and insights!

“As I look back at the entire tapestry of my life, I can see from the perspective of the present moment that every aspect of my life was necessary and perfect.  Each step eventually led to a higher place, even though these steps often felt like obstacles or painful experiences.” ~ Wayne Dyer

“Destiny itself is like a wonderful wide tapestry in which every thread
is guided by an unspeakably tender hand, placed beside another
thread and held and carried by a hundred others.” ~ Rainer Maria Rilke

“Each of us has a purpose for living beyond our own survival and
pleasure.  Every individual is like a thread in a beautiful tapestry
with a vital contribution to make, not only to the sustenance of
life as we know it, but in the creation and development of more
beneficial expressions of life.” ~ John Marks Templeton

Sunday,
July 30th

This Sunday, we delve into our relationships with other creatures with which we share this precious earth.  As humans, we tend to separate ourselves from other species, seeing ourselves as more “highly developed” or above others in the the animal kingdom.  But is that really so? Let’s explore our interrelatedness and how other animals profoundly affect our lives.

“Every animal has his or her story, his or her thoughts, daydreams, and interests. All feel joy and love, pain and fear, as we now know beyond any shadow of a doubt. All deserve that the human animal afford them the respect of being cared for with great consideration for those interests or left in peace.” ~ Ingrid Newkirk

“To be human does not mean to have fled animality, but on the contrary to live within it and to let it live within us…we are animals and animals are us.” ~ Dominique Lestel

Be a good animal, true to your animal instincts. ~  D. H. Lawrence

Sunday,
July 23rd

Thank you for your patience while we got things back on an even keel at Paths of Heart.  You’ll be happy to hear the new air conditioning has been installed! There are still other repairs to be done after our lightning strike, but we’re far enough along to feel comfortable hosting our gatherings again.  As we ease back in, we thought it’d be fun to do another“Poetry Sunday”. What’s up for you this summer?  Share your thoughts with a poem of your own making or choosing.  It’s Potluck Sunday as well, so we hope you can join us in the backyard after our gathering. Bring a dish to share and your own re-usable/washable plates and utensils (we aim for near zero waste).  We’ll provide napkins, cups, and a variety of beverages.  Welcome home!

We apologize for having to cancel again so soon!  Those of you who gathered with us this morning heard about our “unexpected” lightning strike at “Paths of Heart Heartquarters”!  Colleen and Emma leave tonight for gigs and fun on the East Coast, and Mark will stay in Fort Collins, meeting with contractors, etc. throughout the week to assess and repair the damage.  We’re giving him Sunday off at the end of what will surely be a very busy week.  See you on the 23rd, and we’ll celebrate with a potluck in the backyard!

Sunday,
June 25th

This Sunday we’ll discuss the people who have truly inspired us along our path.  At some point in our lives, we have all had a hero, mentor, friend, or family member who has had an indelible, positive influence on us, who has given us motivation and strength to follow our dreams, or simply to carry on in difficult times.  Frank Bonifazi will share a tribute and song for his recently-passed father, Truman, and we invite you to bring your stories of inspiration as well.

“At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.”
~ Albert Schweitzer

“Most of us, swimming against the tides of trouble the world knows nothing about, need only a bit of praise or encouragement – and we will make the goal. “~ Jerome Fleishman

“Surround yourself with people who believe in your dreams, encourage your ideas, support your ambitions, and bring out the best in you.” ~ Roy T. Bennett

This is the power of gathering: it inspires us, delightfully, to be more hopeful, more joyful, more thoughtful; in a word, more alive. ~ Alice Waters

Sunday,
June 18th

The Summer Solstice is “on the horizon” and we’re celebrating fathers and father energy today, so we’ll (among other things, we’re sure!) explore the mythology of “Father Sun” and see how we can apply ancient wisdom to our everyday lives.

“Egyptians called him Ra
To the Greeks He was Helios
The Romans, borrowing from the Greeks, called Him Apollo
Baldur or Odin were His Norse appellations
Ancient Irish traditions referred to Him as Dagda
Persian culture called Him Mithras
In the Anglo-Celtic mythos He was the Oak or Holly King, and of course,
Native Americans called Him, perhaps most directly, Father Sun.” ~ harmonicconcordance.org

“Science gives us some idea of the magnificence and power of that glowing orb which each day ‘rises’ in our eastern sky, banishing calm night, warming and sustaining all creatures and things. But in a quiet corner of our consciousness there is the feeling, the certainty, that the reality is far more splendid than what we see.”

~ John P. Van Mater

Sunday,
June 11th

There’s been lots of planting going on around here lately and it got us to thinking how we can apply that to life. Back in the fall we talked about “God in the Garden”. Think of this as the Spring/Summer edition!  What kind of seeds have you been planting?….

“What we plant in the soil of contemplation, we shall reap in the harvest of action.” ~ Meister Eckhart

“Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.” ~ Martin Luther

“We know we cannot plant seeds with closed fists. To sow, we must open our hands.” ~ Adolfo Perez Esquivel

We are so grateful for this community!  It’s especially fun when we have potlucks and get to visit more in depth with one another.  What a fine time we had last week breaking bread together! Thanks, as always, for helping with clean-up afterwards.  “Many hands make light work”, as Colleen’s Dad always says!

“I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought, and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder.” ~ G.K. Chesterton
