Rediscovering Self

This is the power of gathering: it inspires us, delightfully, to be more hopeful, more joyful, more thoughtful; in a word, more alive. ~ Alice Waters

Sunday,
May 21st

Have you ever felt lost….like the person you used to be or thought you were has somehow gotten buried beneath the every day minutia or even perceived tragedy of what life sometimes “throws” us? How do you “get your groove back”?  That’s what we’ll discuss this week!  Emma Sloniker has an amazing song to sing for us….

“Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves.” – Henry David Thoreau

“Just when I think I have learned the way to live, life changes.” ~ Hugh Prather

“Sometimes you have to kind of die inside in order to rise from your own ashes and believe in yourself and love yourself to become a new person.”
~ Gerard Way

“It is good to feel lost… because it proves you have a navigational sense of where “Home” is. You know that a place that feels like being found exists. And maybe your current location isn’t that place but, Hallelujah, that unsettled, uneasy feeling of lost-ness just brought you closer to it.” ~ Erika Harris

Sunday, May 7th

We are pleased to have Hana Zara as our music guest this Sunday, following her Friday night performance at our “Paths of Heart Presents…” Concert Series (more info on that below!).

We’ll be exploring forgiveness during our gathering.  When we experience an injustice, it’s easy to allow anger, resentment, or revenge to fill our hearts.  If we are experiencing upset or imbalance, the place to look is inside ourselves, not at the circumstance we perceive as causing the problem.  Forgiveness brings freedom and allows peace within ourselves.

“Forgiveness is inherently powerful enough to extend itself wholly and completely to us even when we are the ones in need of forgiving ourselves.” ~ Craig D. Lounsbrough

“I choose ….to live by choice, not by chance:

to make changes, not excuses;

to be motivated, not manipulated;

to be useful, not used;

to excel, not compete.

I choose self-esteem, not self-pity.

I choose to listen to my inner voice, not the random opinion of others.”

~ Skarleth Hdz

“We can always choose love, forgiveness, and compassion over bitterness and anger.”~ Scarlett Lewis

Sunday,
April 30th

This photo, taken by our good friend, Robin MacDonald in City Park a few days ago, perfectly illustrates what we’d like to discuss this Sunday!!  She pondered, as we do….If a heron, a turtle, and two ducks can co-exist peacefully on this small log together, why can’t we, as diverse human beings, find a way to co-exist peacefully on this (rather large) planet together, despite our many perceived differences?  We really have more in common than we sometimes think (and act), and furthermore, diversity is a beautiful thing, don’t you think?  Let’s explore this concept of ‘Harmony in Diversity’ together!

“Is it always to be a winners-losers world, or can we keep everyone in the game? Do we still have what it takes to find a better way?” ~ Robert Fulghum

“When we openly engage with many diverse people, respecting and learning from one another, our personalities are made to sparkle, the flowers of creativity are encouraged to bloom.”
~ Daisaku Ikeda

“If you lack open communication and honesty in your life – It’s time to look within. Are you someone who handles heavy, emotional, or tough information well or do you often get excessively agitated, upset, or depressed? My rule of thumb is that no topic ‘should’ ever be off limits with a loved one. That is the goal to work towards. The point being, if you’re easy to talk to, people will talk to you! If you’re not, then they won’t!” ~ Alaric Hutchinson

It’s National Poetry Month (celebrated each April since 1996) and we all know how much we love poetry here at Pathsof Heart!  So in honor of that, we’re asking you to bring a favorite poem to share with the group this Sunday.  It can be one you’ve written or from a favorite author.  We look forward to hearing the diversity of choices!  Of course, we’ll sprinkle sublime music throughout as well…..

Easter Sunday,
April 16th

Please join us for our Easter potluck following our Paths of Heart Gathering!  Bring a dish to share and your own reusable plate and utensils.  We’ll provide reusable cups, cloth napkins, and a variety of beverages.  Our aim is for zero waste at our gatherings.  We thank you and the environment thanks you for being mindful!

Our discussion this Sunday (before the potluck) will focus on the Easter themes of rebirth, resurrection, and renewal.  We all have the ability to “Begin Again” in every moment, to wake from our deep sleep and celebrate a new life of love, joy, and gratitude.  Bassist, Marty Rein and Emma Sloniker will join us in musical merriment!

“As wave is driven by wave
And each, pursued, pursues the wave ahead,
So time flies on and follows, flies, and follows,
Always, for ever and new. What was before
Is left behind; what never was is now;
And every passing moment is renewed.”                                         ~ Ovid, Metamorphoses

“For within your flesh, deep within the center of your being, is the undaunted, waiting, longing, all-knowing. Is the ready, able, perfect. Within you, waiting its turn to emerge, piece by piece, with the dawn of every former test of trial and blackness, is the next unfolding, the great unfurling of wings, the re-forged backbone of a true Child of Light.”           ~ Jennifer DeLucy

Sunday,
April 9th

We are thrilled to have our dear friend and musical pal, Gayan Gregory Long, join us this Sunday, sharing his passionate drumming and soulful wisdom! Gayan is a drummer, composer, spiritual mentor, retreat leader, and story teller. He has dedicated his life to awakening human potential through music, devotional practices, and community celebration – a perfect match for a “Paths of Heart” gathering, yes?!  We think there might be some dancing involved…  🙂

“Life is about rhythm.  We vibrate, our hearts are pumping blood, we are a rhythm machine, that’s what we are.” ~ Mickey Hart

“Beauty does not linger; it only visits. Yet beauty’s visitation affects us and invites us into its rhythm; it calls us to feel, think and act beautifully in the world: to create and live a life that awakens the Beautiful.  A life without delight is only half a life.” ~ John O’Donohue

“Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance, order, rhythm and harmony.” ~ Thomas Merton

Last month, the Paths of Heart Community decided to sponsor a child through Children International! We are excited to support and nurture Brithany, an 8 year old girl living with her family in Quito, Ecuador.  Thank you so much for your ongoing donations which will help support this unique sponsorship that breaks the cycle of poverty and helps Brithany grow up healthy, educated, and empowered!  What a beautiful opportunity to be of service!

If you know of other service projects we might participate in, locally or globally, we are always open to suggestions.

If this has been forwarded to you by a friend and you would like to join us, we encourage you to add your name to our newsletter list, as schedules do occasionally change,and we like to keep you informed of topics and special events as well. If you know of other interested and kind-hearted souls, they may also contact us by email: info@pathsofheart.org or by phone: 970-484-9600, to learn more about our organization. Thanks!

* CAR-EOGRAPHY *  You may park in the driveway, as well as diagonally along the north side of our property.  Should those areas become full, please park out on Hwy 1, which has plenty of space and a nice wide shoulder.  Please watch for cars as you are exiting and entering your vehicle, though! The carport area is reserved for folks with special parking needs. Out of respect for our neighbors, we ask that you kindly refrain from parking on Evans Drive beyond our property line. Car pooling is encouraged.

Yoga with Heart!

We do yoga here in our “community space” on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.  All levels are welcome to participate.  Let us know if you’re interested in joining this heart centered practice!

“Be a lamp, or a lifeboat, or a ladder. Help someone’s soul heal. Walk out of your house like a shepherd.” ― Rumi

Please note, we are a “remove your shoes upon entering” household (what better way to bare our “souls”…!).  Feel free to bring slippers or thick socks for your comfort (and we always have extras!)

Sunday,
April 2nd

The changing of the seasons can give us pause to celebrate our connection with all that is, and to ponder how each season’s lessons can parallel and guide the cycles of our lives.  Ah, spring!

“The spring wakes us, nurtures us and revitalizes us. How often does your spring come? If you are a prisoner of the calendar, it comes once a year. If you are creating authentic power, it comes frequently, or very frequently.” ~ Gary Zukav

“Oh, Spring! I want to go out and feel you and get inspiration. My old things seem dead. I want fresh contacts, more vital searching.” ~ Emily Carr

“Behold, my friends, the spring is come; the earth has gladly received the embraces of the sun, and we shall soon see the results of their love!” ~ Sitting Bull

What a cool time we had with Myles Sloniker and Linda Briceño last week – we’re grateful they could be with us last Sunday, and share their youthful, expressive energy before heading back to NY.  We can’t wait to see who Myles brings with him next time!

Sunday,
March 26th

It was “spring break” last week, for those of us still tied in to the PSD/CSU class schedules, and Mark and Colleen took a little time off in the Arizona desert for some rest and renewal.  We all need that recharge at times, whether we actually take some time away, or pamper ourselves on the home turf.  Just as spring is ramping up, we too may find ourselves with more on our plates, after winter’s (perhaps) slower pace.  What do you do to recharge, renew, revitalize, reinvent? That’s our discussion this week! We’ll also have some “revitalizing” music with Myles Sloniker/bass, Linda Briceno/trumpet, and Emma Sloniker/vocals, joining us in song!

“Rest leads to renewal of spirit, soul and strength….May you have a fresh strength in the spring season.” ~ Lailah Gifty Akita

“As you move through the seasons of change and make a deliberate decision to Review and Redo along the way, you can begin to see everything from a fresh perspective. This will generate new opportunities for making things better or creating something completely brand new.” ~ Susan C. Young

“Whether we know it or not, our lives are acts of imagination and the world is continually re-imagined through us.” ~ Michael Meade

Roger Funke will lead a discussion on focusing our strengths, based on Tom Rath’s book “Strengths Finder”.
From Roger: “Do you have the opportunity to do what you do best every day?  All too often, our natural talents go untapped.  We devote more time to fixing our shortcomings than to developing our strengths.”  Roger will share the benefits of understanding and focusing on your strengths!

There is an online assessment available for those wishing to explore on their own before Roger’s presentation.  The cost is $15, and includes a download of the book.
